Our vegan omega-3 comes from Schizochytrium sp., a marine algae, and astaxanthin from Haematococcus pluvialis, a freshwater microalgae. Both are sustainably grown, independently tested, and IFOS certified for purity. Look after the algae, and they’ll look after you.
FAQs
Why did you launch a plant based omega-3?
Our bodies can’t make omega-3 so it’s essential we get it through our diet. The richest source of omega-3 is oily fish but if you follow a plant-based diet or have a fish allergy, this isn't an option. Many Nutritional Therapists we work with have vegan clients and have emailed us over the years asking if we would consider creating a plant-based option. After a year of hard work we can finally offer what we think is the best plant-based product you’ll find.
What type of algae do you use?
The omega-3s in this product are sourced from Schizochytrium sp. and the astaxanthin is sourced from Haematococcus pluvialis.
Is algae safe?
Yes, and the two types of algae in this product (Schizochytrium sp. and Haematococcus pluvialis) have been approved by the EFSA for supplemental use in over 18s.
Is Vim & Vigour safe for children?
Vim & Vigour capsules are not suitable for young children under 10yrs, due to limited trials of astaxanthin in these groups.
Is Vim & Vigour safe to take during pregnancy and breastfeeding?
No, we don't recommend it for pregnancy or breastfeeding due to the astaxanthin. There haven't been enough safety studies at this point, so safer to avoid for now.
What are the upgraded capsules made from?
We’ve changed the coating from corn starch to pea starch. Our long-term manufacturer suggested the switch because pea starch makes a better (more stable) capsule. Which sounded like a very good idea to us.
We checked the ingredients and confirmed it’s the same vegan-friendly goodness, with none of the horror plastics sneaking into your system. It won’t change the texture, the taste, or the feel of the capsule. So we agreed.
What other changes have you made to Vim & Vigour?
Just the peas, we promise. What's inside the capsules has not changed. It's still the same omega-3 from sustainably grown algae oil, plus astaxanthin, a freshwater microalgae and potent antioxidant. Together, they will get busy keeping your immune system strong. But now they live in a pea shell, instead of corn.
Why are the capsules red?
The capsules are dark red in colour because of the astaxanthin—a pink/red carotenoid pigment extracted from the alga Haematococcus pluvialis.
What is astaxanthin?
It's a powerful antioxidant and type of carotenoid.
What are the benefits of astaxanthin?
- May improve gastric health.
- May improve symptoms of age-related forgetfulness.
- May help refocus tired eyes.
- Can enhance overall skin health by improving skin moisture, elasticity and reducing wrinkles.
- Improves muscle performance and recovery.
- Can contribute to improved cardiovascular health.
- Possesses potent anti-inflammatory properties.
- These claims are backed up by studies using relatively few subjects and have no associated approved health claims, so they can not be used on the packaging.
How many calories in one dose?
23 calories per 2 daily capsules.
Does this product contain iodine?
The product is not marine sourced, but derived from fermentation of the micro-algae Schizochytrium sp. Iodine testing was performed historically on representative oils produced from the microalgae. In all instances, iodine was found to be below the assay detection limit of 0.1 ppm.
Taking into consideration the above cited reasons, iodine is not expected to be present in this product. As a result, iodine is not currently monitored.
Are there any allergens in these?
There are no known allergens (as required to be declared by food law) in Vim & Vigour.
Please see our allergen statement for more info.
